OpenOffice is a free Office suite build by Apache.It is similar, free and best alternate software for Microsoft Office and it is highly compatible with all office file types.It is a successor of famous Sun Micro system’s Star Office.
OpenOffice is developed by Apache as a free word processing software.OpenOffice contains writer as word processing for writing a quick letter up to entire book, calc as a spreadsheet to calculate, analyze, and present your data in numerical reports or sizzling graphics. It contains Impress similar to Microsoft Presentation to create best presentation.Draw lets you produce everything from simple diagrams to dynamic 3D illustrations which is similar to Publisher.
For creating and modifying tables, forms, queries, and reports OpenOffice provides Base which is similar to Access in Microsoft Office. There is also a product dedicated for equations called as OpenOffice Math for creating mathematical and scientific equations.
The predecessor of Open Office is Star Office created by Sun Micro System who is the developer of today’s Java language. Due to losses and not able to monetize their product properly Sun Micro system was sold to Oracle. Due to this exchange Star office was discontinued and new product called OpenOffice, LibreOffice was launched. OpenOffice is maintained by Apache.

After Downloading the file save it to the desired folder.Open the download file and click Run.You will be shown a thank you window.Click ‘next ‘. Click ‘Browse’ to choose the folder where you want to extract the Installation files.You can also delete that files after installation. Now click ‘Unpack’. It will take some time.
In the installation wizard click ‘next’ .If you have multiple users in your system you can choose whether you or all users can use OpenOffice.Better keep checked ‘Any one who use this computer ( all users )’. Then click next.
Choose custom install. choose the folder where you want to install open office.The default is C drive.But you can change this to any location.
If you don’t have MS Office installed check all the options.What it does is OpenOffice will be made as a default application for launching the chosen Microsoft file types.
Click next and keep checked ‘create start link on desktop’. Click ‘install’ it will take some time to install.
After the product is installed click on ‘finish’. Now click on Open Office shortcut on desktop.Click ‘next’. In the next window Enter your name you wish . This name will appear as document author name.Now Open Office Installation is finished.You can now start working by clicking any one of the products.
First of all we compare with MS Office.We all know that MS Office is the top Office suite in the world and it is not free except students and staffs who have ” .edu ” Email address .Also updates are not free in MS Office, But in OpenOffice everything is free and you don’t need to pay a penny.Most users dont see any difference between two products but MS Office is a benchmark for office suites. They have good UI , navigation, and dedicated customer support which is not present in any office suites.
In system Requirements it is clear that OpenOffice can run and perform better even in low hardware machines compared to MS Office which needs good hardware.From the point of safety MS Office provides security updates to keep the files safe from hackers which we cant expect from free office suites.Also free suites don’t have email integration as compared to MS Office
